Recently released NCRB report on suicide among students, professional, daily wage earner, housewife, unemployed person etc shows gloomy picture of state. A high rise in such cases has been reported in pandemic time. Unfortunately mental health has never been as prime a concern as physical health.According to the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), suicides in India rose 10 per cent from 2019 to an all-time high of 1,53,052 in the pandemic year of 2020. More severe issue is that student suicides see the highest percentage increase at 21.20 per cent increasing from 10,335 in 2019 to 14,825 in 2020. Students suicide share went up from 7.4 per cent to 8.2 per cent.
Since mental health among school and college students are less talked about. School students due to their tinder age Often take extreme steps like suicide. However, the genesis of such steps is not only due to performance pressure among students; rather , causes like caste, gender and religion based descrimination are also practiced widely in educational institutions. Recent study by leading Indian English daily shows the suicide data among Jawahar Navodaya vidyalaya school campuses. But among residential students, homesickness can be another reason.
Similarly among IIT-JEE, NEET and CSE ( civil service exams) aspirants suicidal tendency has been reported in the past. However many prominent Coaching institutions adopted one to one counseling for students especially among IIT-JEE and NEET Aspirants. In initial phases and during enrolment of students, these Coaching institutions do not tell true pictures of competition in such all India level exams. There is ample data and statistics among public domain which coaching institutions should use for better guidance and real counseling. Merely motivational talk can never ensure success for less passionate students. However, even many hardworking CSE aspirants do not come out from the pre- mains- interview cycle of the exam, primarily due to uncertainty of exam and ray of hope they see after each attempt.
Hence many students exhaust all their attempts without any alternative career. These trends have been more common among tier 2 and 3 college students and those who have no background of professional courses like engineering, law, medicine etc. Lack of financial Security and lackness of resource richness result in poor performance in study also. Hence it is the need of the hour to make students aware about actual competition at the initial stage while they are entering in the preparation phase. Of Course there is a gray area between discouraging students to prepare and telling them about the real scene. Like most of the IIT-JEE and NEET institutions, IAS/ PCS coaching too should offer counseling on one to one basis. Residential campuses should be more inclusive in terms of accepting diverse caste, religion and region based people.
Homesickness among early hostellers should never be seen as a sign of immaturity. Regular meetup with their parents should be ensured furthermore leave provision should be more flexible for school students. Monitoring on social media use by students can be ensured as it is a virtual world and has its own lies which can not be easily contemplated by the person on the other side of the screen. Parental monitoring and warden can play the role of supervisor here. Here too, students' privacy should not be intruded; rather their screen time can be controlled and more outdoor and social activities should be promoted. Non Academic counseling as recently adopted by IIT gandhinagar by their own teacher and faculty members should be promoted with some tailoring and customization as per institutions and students need.
